Access To Information

True liberation means giving people enough and relevant information, that enables them to make informed decisions about their lives. ABDO has made access to information a key performance area through establishment of community libraries in rural marginalized areas.

A number of these community libraries have been equipped with internet facilities to increase access to information thereby world a small village in terms of communication through social media and access to information and education materials. The community libraries are owned by the communities and managed by library management committees (LMC) including teacher and community librarians.

Study Circles

Study Circles resemble communal problem solving gatherings around a fire called dare or idale in pre-historic ensembles or communities. The principle is premised by dialoguing among circle members to tap on the wisdoms and knowledge of individuals in a democratic way so as to find lasting solutions to the problem they will have identified. In essence it is a group of 6 to 12 people who share common interests because they are affected by the same problems.

ABDO has supported study circles for school children, out of school youths, men and women. These study circles have yielded marked impacts such improved pass rates, skills acquisition and improved family incomes. The community libraries stand as the reference point for knowledge as they do related researches.

Training For Transformation (TFT)

Training for transformation (TFT) is a transformative educational approach that aims at liberating people from the different poverties and oppressions. It is both participatory problem solving methodology and empowerment tool. Training for Transformation has been used to capacitate circles leaders and ABDO field staff to be the leaders and facilitators and animators in the development process.

TFT plays a significant role in building communities on different aspects, supporting and creating safe spaces for them to share experiences, to envision the future and plan solutions for a more equitable and just society. Communities, after going through the training, realise they have legal and ethical responsibilities to be in charge of their lives and their own development and hence participate to the fullest.
